Southport is the Gold Coast suburb most visitors drive through rather than stopping in, which is a small mistake worth correcting. It sits a few minutes north of Surfers and about five minutes south of Ocean Sands at Main Beach, and over the past decade it has quietly assembled the pieces of a proper day out: a serious arts precinct, a long stretch of waterfront parkland, a working shopping centre, and a botanic garden that earns the title. None of it requires a beach towel. All of it is useful in August, when late-winter mornings are crisp, the days are mild and sunny by ten, and the whales are still passing the coast on their way south.
What follows is a guide for guests who want a day off the sand without leaving the area.
HOTA is the centrepiece of the Southport arts scene and, depending on what's programmed, the centrepiece of the Gold Coast's. The complex sits at 135 Bundall Road, about ten minutes from Hughes Avenue, and includes the HOTA Gallery (free entry, year-round), an outdoor amphitheatre, an indoor performing arts centre, several restaurants, and a boutique hotel. The gallery runs a rotating program of Queensland and national exhibitions, and the outdoor stage hosts free community concerts alongside ticketed performances.
August is a good month for it. The winter program is usually well underway, the cooler evenings are pleasant for outdoor screenings, and the building itself, with its pixelated facade visible from the M1, is worth the walk-around even if you don't go in. Check the HOTA program before your stay; the calendar shifts week to week and the better events sell out.
A practical note: parking on site is straightforward, and the rooftop bar at the gallery has one of the better views in Southport, particularly at sunset.
The Southport Broadwater Parklands sit on the water adjacent to the Southport CBD, about five minutes north of Ocean Sands. The free water play area, the skate park, the rock pools, the playgrounds, and the long stretch of grass facing the Broadwater make it the best free outdoor destination on this part of the coast. Families with kids in tow can spend a full morning here without spending anything.
In August the water play area is generally cooler than peak summer would have it, but the sun is gentle and the parklands themselves are still the draw. Pack a picnic, walk the boardwalk along the foreshore, and watch the boat traffic on the Broadwater. If the timing is right, you might see whale spouts further out on the horizon; the migration is still on through August and the Broadwater gives a good vantage point.
The Gold Coast Aquatic Centre sits adjacent to the parklands and is open to the public, with a 50-metre outdoor lap pool, a heated indoor pool, and a smaller pool for younger children. Useful as a wet-weather backup or for anyone who'd rather swim laps than wander the sand. Combined with a HOTA visit and lunch in town, it makes a complete day that costs very little.
For practical shopping, Australia Fair is Southport's main centre. It has the usual major retailers, a Coles supermarket, banks, a cinema, and a workable food court. It isn't Pacific Fair in scale or polish, but for Ocean Sands guests who need supplies, a chemist, a haircut, or a wet-weather backup, it does the job efficiently and is about seven minutes from Hughes Avenue.
Southport Central, across the road, is the newer development with a different mix. The retail is lighter and the food and beverage is heavier, with a precinct of cafes and restaurants at street level that have built a quiet local following. It's worth knowing about as an alternative to Tedder Avenue for a casual weeknight dinner, particularly if you've already eaten your way down Tedder earlier in the week.
The Light Rail tram stops directly outside both, which makes Southport one of the easier suburbs to visit without driving.
The Gold Coast Regional Botanic Gardens at Benowa are about fifteen minutes by car from Main Beach, free to enter, and surprisingly underused given the quality of what's there. The gardens cover subtropical and rainforest plantings, with a significant collection of Queensland natives in a setting managed well enough to justify the word 'garden' over 'park'.
Early morning is the best time to go, particularly in August. The bird life is active in the cooler hours before the day warms, the light through the canopy is good, and the paths are quiet. There's a small lake, several picnic shelters, and enough variety in the plantings to make a slow loop worthwhile. Allow an hour, more if you bring a coffee and a book.
How far is Southport from Ocean Sands?
About five minutes by car to the Broadwater Parklands and Australia Fair, ten minutes to HOTA at Bundall, fifteen minutes to the Botanic Gardens at Benowa. The Light Rail also runs from Main Beach into central Southport in around ten minutes.
Is HOTA worth visiting if there's nothing on?
Yes. The gallery is free, the building itself is interesting, and the rooftop bar and ground-floor restaurants are open year-round.
Is Southport family-friendly?
The Broadwater Parklands are one of the best free family destinations on the Gold Coast, with a water play area, playgrounds, a skate park, and open lawns. HOTA also runs family programming through the school holidays.
Can I visit Southport without a car?
Yes. The G:link Light Rail runs from Main Beach to Southport in about ten minutes and stops at Australia Fair, the Broadwater Parklands and the Southport CBD.
If you're putting a Southport day into a longer Gold Coast trip, our Main Beach apartments put you within five to fifteen minutes of everything mentioned above. The two and three bedroom layouts give families room to spread out after a morning at the parklands, and our tour desk and on-site managers can help with timing, parking, and anything HOTA hasn't already answered. Take a look at available rooms or get in touch to lock in your dates.
