Broadwater Kayaking and Family Fishing: A Main Beach Day Out

The Broadwater sits there, flat and protected, while the ocean a few hundred metres east is doing whatever the swell happens to be doing that morning. From Ocean Sands you can see it from the north-facing balconies. In October, with the water warming up properly after winter and spring fully in, Broadwater kayaking becomes one of the better arguments for not getting in the car and driving anywhere further. The whole sheltered system runs from the Spit down through to Southport, and most of what's worth doing on it is inside fifteen minutes of Hughes Avenue.

This is also, for what it's worth, the quieter half of October. School holidays just finished. The Boost Mobile Gold Coast 500 is rolling into town for the V8 Supercars street circuit at Surfers Paradise late in the month, which means the southern end of the strip gets noisier, but the Broadwater stays exactly the same.

Southport Broadwater Parklands

The Broadwater Parklands sit about eight minutes south of Ocean Sands by car, or a longer pleasant walk if you've got the morning. They're the most complete free family destination on the Gold Coast, and the operative word there is free. The water play area, with its spray jets and shallow wading sections, runs year-round and handles children from toddlers upward. October is when it stops being a brave choice and starts being an obvious one.

Adjacent to the water play, there's a skate park, a full playground, BBQ facilities, and enough open grass to host a respectable family cricket match. Pack lunch from one of the cafes on Tedder Avenue before you go, or use the BBQs. The backdrop to all of this is the calm Broadwater itself and the view across to the southern end of South Stradbroke Island, which is the kind of horizon line that makes a sandwich taste better.

Broadwater Kayaking and SUP Hire

The water along this stretch is good for paddling. Flat, calm most mornings, with interesting geography that includes the shallow Broadwater edge, Wavebreak Island sitting in the middle of it all, and the canal entrances that thread into the Gold Coast's private waterway system.

Best time to paddle in October is early. The water is glass before nine, the breeze picks up through the day, and by mid-afternoon you'll be working harder than you wanted to. Sunscreen, hat, water, and shoes you don't mind getting wet. The Spit launching points are about ten minutes north of Ocean Sands; the Broadwater Parklands launch is about eight minutes south.

Fishing from the Broadwater

The Broadwater is productive fishing water, particularly along the edges of the Spit and around the Parklands seawall. Bream, flathead, and whiting are the common catches, with flathead in the shallows of the Spit being the most accessible species for anyone wading or fishing from the bank.

Fishing from the Parklands seawall is popular with local families in the late afternoon, which is its own endorsement. You don't need a boat and you don't need a charter. Bait from a local tackle shop, a rod from a hire shop or borrowed, and the kids have an activity that's genuinely productive and cheap. October is reliable for whiting on the run-out tide.

A Queensland recreational saltwater fishing licence isn't required for tidal waters here, but bag limits and minimum sizes apply. For anyone wanting to go further offshore, several charter operators work out of Marina Mirage and Mariner's Cove, both walking distance from Ocean Sands. Half-day family trips run around $150 per adult and $80 per child as a rough guide. Wavebreak Island Picnic

Wavebreak Island sits in the middle of the Broadwater and is accessible by water taxi, private boat, or a paddle of about twenty minutes from the Spit. It has a beach on the ocean side and calm Broadwater on the other, and it's largely undeveloped. There are no cafes, no kiosks, no toilets beyond the basic. You bring what you want, you carry it back.

A picnic on Wavebreak Island, with everything packed in by kayak from Action Outdoor Hire's drop-off, is the kind of Gold Coast family day out that most people have never heard of. The ones who have done it tend to do it again. October weather is close to ideal for this; warm enough to swim, cool enough to walk the perimeter without melting.
