The Gold Coast Coastal Walk from Main Beach: A September Guide

Sept 2026

The thing about the Gold Coast Oceanway is that it does what it says it will do. A continuous shared path runs along the beachfront from Coolangatta in the south to the Spit in the north, and Main Beach sits roughly at the midpoint. From Ocean Sands at 11-17 Hughes Avenue, the Gold Coast Coastal Walk is directly accessible. This is not a drive-to-the-trailhead situation. You walk out of the apartments, cross the Esplanade, and you are on it.

September is, in my view, the right month to do this on foot or by bike. The summer humidity has not arrived. Mornings sit around 13 to 15 degrees, afternoons climb into the low twenties, and the sea breeze is back to being a help rather than an obstacle. The water is warming up but the crowds are still thin. The school holidays land in the last week of the month, so anything before about 25 September is properly quiet.

What the Path Actually Is

The Oceanway is a shared path, cyclists and pedestrians, and the surface along the Main Beach section is well maintained. It is mostly sealed concrete or asphalt, wide enough that passing is comfortable in both directions. The path follows the beachfront closely, with the dunes immediately to one side and the low-rise apartment buildings on the other. From Main Beach, the views south to the Surfers Paradise skyline are one of the coast's better walking backdrops, particularly in the half-hour after sunrise when the light hits the towers from the east.

The City of Gold Coast maintains the path and publishes route maps for the entire 36 kilometre stretch. Their Gold Coast Oceanway page is worth a look before you head out, especially if you want to plan a longer one-way ride and bus back.

South to Surfers Paradise

From Ocean Sands heading south, the path reaches the northern end of the Surfers Paradise Esplanade in about twenty-five minutes on foot, or ten minutes by bike. The distance is roughly 2.5 kilometres. The Q1 building grows from the skyline as you approach, and the transition from Main Beach's lower-rise buildings into the Surfers density is interesting for the contrast. You go from quiet to busy in the space of about ten minutes.

If you keep going, the path continues through Broadbeach (around 5km from Hughes Avenue, about 20 minutes by bike) and on toward Mermaid Beach and Burleigh. Burleigh is roughly 13km south, which is a 45 to 60 minute ride at a relaxed pace. The Burleigh end is where the path gets the most attention from photographers, and for good reason. The headland from the north is genuinely striking.

North to the Spit and Federation Walk

Heading north from Main Beach, the path continues past Sea World (about 2km, 7 minutes by bike) and into Federation Walk, which is the conservation-managed section that runs the length of the Spit. This is the quieter direction, and in September it is quieter still. Fewer people, more native vegetation, and an increasingly natural feel as you leave the developed suburbs behind. Banksias, pandanus, the occasional brush turkey.

The path through the Spit is less formal than the southern sections; it transitions from sealed surface to compacted track in places. At the far northern end, around 4km from Hughes Avenue, you reach the seaway and the Doug Jennings Park area. This is where the migrating humpback whales are still passing south on their return run from the breeding grounds. September is the tail end of the season, so sightings are not guaranteed, but a slow morning walk to the seaway with a thermos is a low-cost gamble that occasionally pays off spectacularly.

Bike Hire and Practicalities

Several bike hire operators work along the Gold Coast beachfront in the Main Beach and Surfers Paradise area. Hourly and half-day rates apply, and both standard and e-bike options are generally available. E-bikes make the longer routes more manageable on days when the sea breeze is head-on, which in September it often is from the south-east in the afternoon. Worth knowing: most operators run from around 8am, so a sunrise ride needs to be on a hire from the day before, or on your own bike.

A few practical notes. The path is signposted, but the kilometre markers can be inconsistent in the Federation Walk section. There are public toilets at most major beach access points, including the patrolled section at Main Beach surf club, about 400 metres from Hughes Avenue. Tedder Avenue, a short stroll inland, is where the coffee actually is; a long black after a beach ride at one of the cafes there is one of the suburb's more reliable pleasures.

Where to Stop Along the Way

A few places worth building a stop around:

  • Main Beach surf club and patrolled beach, 400m from Hughes Avenue. Patrolled, with showers and toilets.
  • Marina Mirage and YOT Deck, about 1km west of the Oceanway via a short connector path. Coffee, harbour views, the boats.
  • Sea World monorail station, 2km north. Useful as a turnaround point for shorter rides.
  • Doug Jennings Park, the Spit, 4km north. End of the line for the unsealed coastal track. Whale-watching territory in September.
  • Surfers Paradise foreshore, 2.5km south. The contrast point.

Mini-FAQ

How long is the Gold Coast Coastal Walk in total?

The full Oceanway runs 36km from Coolangatta to the Spit. Most visitors do a 2 to 8km section.

Is the path suitable for prams and wheelchairs?

The Main Beach to Surfers section is fully sealed and accessible. The Federation Walk section north of Sea World has unsealed stretches.

Is there shade?

Patchy. The Main Beach section has some pandanus cover, but most of it is open. A hat is a good idea even in September.

Can I walk it at night?

The Main Beach to Surfers Paradise section is lit. Federation Walk is not, and is best treated as a daytime walk.

Plan Your September Trip

If you want a base that sits directly on the Oceanway, with the path 30 seconds from the front door, Ocean Sands is built for this. Two and three bedroom self-contained apartments, secure underground parking for the car you won't need to use much, and a tour desk that can sort bike hire. Browse the rooms or get in touch via the contact page to lock in a September stay before the school holidays land.
