Main Beach sits between Surfers Paradise and the Spit. From Hughes Avenue you can see the Broadwater on one side and the ocean on the other, and on 31 December both directions tend to light up. Christmas has just wrapped, the apartments are full of families who've been here all week, and the suburb has settled into a slow summer rhythm. The fireworks are visible from the foreshore, the dinner reservations are a four-minute walk away on Tedder Avenue, and the walk home takes ten minutes.
Right now, in the last week of December 2025, it's a sensible base for a New Year's Eve Gold Coast trip with kids, with extended family, or with anyone who'd rather watch the displays than queue for them.
Surfers Paradise runs two firework displays on 31 December. The early one, usually around 8:30pm, is pitched at families with younger kids who'd prefer not to negotiate midnight. The main display launches at midnight from the beach off Cavill Avenue. Both are visible from the southern end of Main Beach, a few minutes' walk from Ocean Sands down towards the Surfers boundary.
The Broadwater side has its own quieter show, generally launched off Marine Stadium near Doug Jennings Park at the Spit. From the north end of Hughes Avenue it's about a 10-minute walk to a clear viewing spot along the Broadwater foreshore. What you notice first is the absence of crowds. People bring camp chairs, eskies, and a calm that the Surfers crowd can't quite manage.
If you'd rather not move at all, the rooftop and pool areas at most of the Main Beach apartment buildings face north, which means the Broadwater fireworks read clearly from the building itself. Worth checking with the front desk on arrival to see what's accessible on the night.
For the official confirmed times and any updates, the Experience Gold Coast events page is where the local tourism body posts the schedule closer to the date. Times tend to firm up in the last week of December.
The shape of the night from Hughes Avenue is straightforward. Dinner on Tedder Avenue, a four-minute walk from the door. Down to the southern end of the foreshore for the 8:30pm family display, or up Sea World Drive toward the Spit for the Broadwater fireworks. Home along a residential street.
A few things that make the night work:
For families, the maths is simple. Kids can watch the 8:30pm display, walk back, and be in bed by 9:30pm. The midnight show carries to the balcony, with a glass of something cold and the Broadwater in the foreground.
Tedder Avenue is one of the Gold Coast's better eating streets. It's a local strip that visitors have learned to find, and the difference shows on a night like NYE. The Italian place at one end, the seafood spot near the corner, the wine bar that takes walk-ins until about 7pm. Most of the restaurants on Tedder run a set menu on 31 December at slightly elevated prices, which is standard for the night.
Book early. The serious places fill by mid-November for NYE, and even the casual spots tighten up by early December. If you've left it late, the cafes on Tedder open through the day on the 31st for breakfast and lunch, and Marina Mirage (a 5-minute walk from Hughes) has a few options that take last-minute reservations because of the volume of seats they hold.
A few notes for the night itself:
Most people arrive on the 31st and want to fill the afternoon without committing to anything ambitious. A few options within walking distance of Hughes Avenue:
Tedder Avenue is worth an hour in the late afternoon. The cafes do good iced coffee, and the local bottle shop is the easiest place to pick up something for the balcony at midnight.
What time are the Gold Coast NYE fireworks?
Surfers Paradise runs two displays on 31 December: an early family-friendly show around 8:30pm, and the main midnight display. The Broadwater show typically launches at midnight from the Marine Stadium area near the Spit. Times confirm closer to the date through Experience Gold Coast.
Can you see Surfers Paradise fireworks from Main Beach?
Yes. The southern end of Main Beach has a clear view of the Surfers display. From most Main Beach apartments, the rooftop or balcony catches both the Surfers fireworks to the south and the Broadwater fireworks to the north.
What's the noise level at Main Beach on NYE?
Residential streets, a Tedder Avenue at a high but manageable hum, and apartments that face north over the Broadwater. The midnight show carries to the balcony, but the ambient base is closer to a regular summer Saturday than a club strip.
Do Tedder Avenue restaurants take bookings on NYE?
Yes, and you'll need them. Most book out by mid-November for 31 December. Set menus are standard at the higher-end places. Cafes and casual spots are easier walk-ins during the day.
Plan Your Stay
Ocean Sands is on Hughes Avenue, two minutes from Main Beach and a short stroll to Tedder. The 2 and 3 bedroom apartments work for families and groups who want space, a kitchen, and somewhere to come back to that isn't a hotel corridor. Check availability and have a look at the 3 bedroom apartments if you're travelling with extended family. There's a tour desk if you want help with NYE bookings on arrival.
